Robert Graves

Two quick introductions below are adapted from Robert Graves 'The White Goddess'. [the drawings are adapted from his book]

Source of the Alphabet

Its discovery

Palamedes 'found' the alphabet by consulting the White Goddess - a triple being - who instructed him in how to follow the white cranes*.

The Hidden Roebuck.

Symbolic of the elusive nature of wisdom, the roebuck refers not only to death (Iodh/ yew) which ends the year, but to the inevitable consequence and rebirth of life (symbolised in Ailm/ fir) whose month is Beithe/ birch...

*(traditionally, Palamedes brings the alphabet back to Greece from Egypt. From here it moves west to Spain before heading north to Ireland and Wales with the Tuatha de Danaan, who establish the druidic scholarship associated with it.)
