A community tree alphabet
Through use of text, image and sculptural means, there remains hope to engage the community in exploring and celebrating the
successive layers of history, myth and culture that have shaped, or been
shaped by, the environment of trees. By employing the Celtic Alphabet,
where each letter is represented by a native tree or shrub, we hope to
provide a constant, if evolving, reference point for those involved in
native woodland and encourage an active engagement with art. We would
envisage each tree providing a starting point from which a historical,
folkloric, economic or botanical theme can be researched and responded
to creatively through sculpture, painting, song, poem or story. The
landscape itself can become art, in such a way that all the senses are
engaged. Using a range of tools, from the most primitive to
state-of-the-art, the project promotes environmentally friendly, yet
interactive technologies, for an effective narrative context to the
project.
